In the era of industrial automation, cybersecurity in the IoT (Internet of Things) and OT (Operational
Technology)
sectors has become a top priority. IoT and OT systems are critical to the operation of
critical infrastructure, i.e., industries such as energy, transportation, manufacturing, and many others.
Protecting these systems from potential cyber-attacks is essential to ensuring business continuity and
public safety.

The Role of OT and IoT

Operational Technology (OT)
includes the hardware and software systems that monitor and control
physical processes in industrial environments. These systems, critical to the safe and efficient operation
of critical infrastructure, include:

  • Distributed Control Systems (DCS): used to control complex, distributed industrial processes,
    such as those found in refineries, power plants, and chemical industries.
  • Supervisory and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA): systems that collect and analyze data in
    real-time to monitor and control the operations of infrastructure such as electricity grids, water
    systems, and gas pipelines.
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs): Programmable electronic devices used for the
    automation of industrial processes, such as the control of production lines, machine tools, and
    transportation systems.

IoT devices are present in all market sectors. In particular, as regards the Industrial sector, the devices in
use can be the following:

  • Sensors: monitor physical parameters such as temperature, pressure, humidity, vibration, and
    other factors crucial to industrial processes.
  • Actuators: components that interact with the physical environment by performing actions
    based on data received from sensors or control systems (opening valves, starting engines, etc.)
  • Controllers: Process data collected by sensors and send commands to actuators, often
    integrated with more complex control systems to optimize industrial operations.

What risks can occur?

Following numerous attack activities on our customers in the retail, manufacturing, and industrial
sectors, we have had the opportunity to verify how the exploitation of vulnerabilities can impact both
the infrastructure and the entire company.

Currently, users of OT technologies purchase hardware and software products from third parties to
automate various aspects of their operations: these include manufacturers, physical component and
network equipment suppliers, system integrators, and more.

However, those managing OT operations often do not have sufficient visibility into the IT products and
services implemented by these third parties. Therefore, if such vendors do not maintain rigorous and
effective cybersecurity measures, their machines and devices could become attack vectors.

Regardless of the company’s security posture, any security breach, at any stage of the supply chain
lifecycle, could expose the entire organization to data loss, operational downtime, and reputational
damage.

Why is it important to secure IoT and OT systems?

  1. To ensure the protection of critical infrastructures, such as power grids, transportation
    networks, and manufacturing facilities, which are heavily dependent on OT and IoT systems. A
    cyber attack on these systems could disrupt essential services, causing disruption and potential
    dangers to public safety.
  2. To ensure operational continuity, which is fundamental for industrial operations. Cyber attacks
    that disrupt the functioning of control systems can lead to downtime and production losses.
  3. To protect the safety of people and the environment, many OT systems control processes
    that, if compromised, can cause physical harm to people and the environment (for example, the
    release of harmful substances following an attack on a chemical plant).
  4. To protect the data that IoT systems collect and transmit in large quantities. It is necessary to
    protect the confidentiality and integrity of this data, preventing unauthorized access and
    manipulation.
  5. Safeguard IT/OT convergence, given the growing integration between these two systems. OT
    systems are now connected to larger IT networks. This increases the attack surface and requires
    security strategies that cover both domains.

Who we rely on

Cyber security in the IoT and OT sectors is therefore fundamental to protect critical infrastructures and
ensure operational continuity and public safety. As threats increase, it is essential to adopt advanced
security measures and follow best practices to ensure the resilience of industrial systems.

For this reason, our collaboration with Radiflow – a solution that includes tools for threat detection, risk
management, management centralization, and vulnerability detection of OT networks – allows us to
guarantee our customers effective solutions to manage the security of supply chains. Radiflow solutions
are designed to ensure:

  • Network Visibility, by creating a digital model of the company’s OT network, including
    topology, device properties, vulnerabilities, and attack vectors. This model is used for attack
    simulations and offers complete visibility of the network;
  • Risk Assessment, simulations of numerous breach attempts to evaluate the effectiveness of the
    security measures installed, taking into account the impact of a possible interruption of the
    industrial units;
  • Implementation of an ROI-optimized OT security plan with prioritized mitigation measures to
    strengthen network security;
  • Long-term management, continuous monitoring of the ICS network to identify and mitigate
    intrusion attempts, and constantly evaluate the risk posture due to new threats.
    In a context where the integration between IT and OT is increasingly deeper, our integrated approach
    represents the best defense against cyber attacks. Adopting advanced safety measures is not only a
    necessity, but a strategic investment to protect industrial operations from potential disasters.
